Join me for an inspiring tour of the National Gallery in London, a wonderful introduction to one of the world’s greatest art collections. Home to around 2,300 paintings, the gallery takes us on a journey through the history of European painting, from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. Here you will see religious Renaissance paintings, Dutch genre scenes, elegant aristocratic portraits, mythological subjects, and the bold experiments of the Post-Impressionists.

The gallery celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2024. It all began in 1824, when the banker and passionate collector John Julius Angerstein laid the foundation for what would become the National Gallery, and the House of Commons approved £57,000 for the purchase of his collection, the first 38 paintings of the national treasury. Today, the National Gallery is rightly regarded as one of the world’s great temples of painting.

Art lovers will enjoy the monumental works of Rubens, the refined royal portraits by his pupil Anthony van Dyck, and masterpieces by Rembrandt and Titian. The English school is represented by the poetic landscapes of Gainsborough and Constable, as well as the witty and often sharp social scenes of Hogarth, who so vividly captured the manners of 18th-century London.
